Bobby ~ Online validator that checks your webpage for accessibility. Don't think that's important? Read the friendly information.

There are two kinds of people building websites: those who care about content, and those who are content not to care.

Nvu ~ Pronounce it N-view, and work on your previously constructed pages without f*cking up the code (at least not the basics), or start from scratch. This is the primo free WYSIWYG editor.
What, you need an FTP client now? FileZilla is pretty good these days. Then again, you could just simplify your life by using Free Commander as both file manager and FTP client. I do.

SHELL EXTENSION CITY ~ links to good software with a bias toward doing Windows your way.
Son Of Spy ~ An old favorite. One heck of a list of useful things, most links are direct download from the source. NO spyware, no adware. It seems to be gone.
TinyApps.Org Home ~ Software doesn't have to be fat to do the job
NONAGS ~ Nag-free freeware only
Freeware Updates ~ See what's new, or just shop around in their regular list
IrfanView ~ One piece of software that I can not live without. Whether you merely want to look at pictures or resize them, or do outrageous things to them, IrfanView is the ultimate tool. You don't need Adobe PhotoBloat to resize your baby pics (that's like using a sledgehammer to drive a half-inch brad anyway lol), or even to take out the red eyes.

Fractal Explorer ~ IMHO the best. If you visit any of my fractal galleries you will see what it can do.
Fractovia ~ connect with the whole fractal world here, or the best parts of it, anyway.
Fractalia.com ~ my southern hemisphere doppleganger?
Muffinmeat Fractals 'Cause I like it. Unfortunately, Geocities is getting more obnoxious.
Ice Flowers - Nature's fractal beauty

MDGX ~ Tweak capital of the world. It's your computer.
Cyber Tech Help
Fatal Exception Decoder ~ It said what when it crashed? ;-)
Startups - Contents ~ WTF all those mysterious invisible processes are, and are they necessary? Many programs install a lot of odd bits, processes that start with Windows and waste resources that might be put to better use. Then there are the bad guys. Sort them out and clean up your startups.

the AuelBoard ~ Fans of Jean Auel's Earth's Children" series hang out here to talk and trade tales. Some of the world's worst fanfic here -- and some gems amid the mud.
Project Gutenberg ~ Free text versions of thousands of books.
FullBooks ~ Another source of free literature. You don't have to go to the library in nasty weather.
FanFiction.Net ~ Caveat lector. I think one in 200 may be good reading. I visit once in a while but usually stagger away groaning.

Need something else? Voila! Your choice of search engines. Clusty is handy because it organizes the results into "clusters" of related material. That can help you to narrow down your search a little faster sometimes.

All search engines are a little different. They will find a slightly different range of items and your input may not be applied in the same way. One gets used to using a particular tool, but sometimes it is good to change.

Would you still do it if it was not a sure thing?

The Shell Game

I used LiteShell for several years with Windows 98. When I landed in XP, I tried it -- but wound up in a bad place. Owoo! It is good to be a geek!

For a long time after that I stuck with Wez's EvilDesk, but it annoyed me in small ways, and never got updated. So I switched to Emerge Desktop, an Open Source shell that is minimal enough for me but highly configurable. I'm still in love.
